A 30-second cleaning routine for a wood cat tree

A wood tower does not need a deep clean every weekend. It needs a short, repeatable routine that keeps fur, dust and odour from building up in the first place.

A 30-second cleaning routine for a wood cat tree

Key takeaways

  • Wipe high-traffic platforms daily and vacuum the sisal weekly.
  • Wash removable pads monthly and dry them fully before refitting.
  • Avoid steam, bleach and silicone polish on sealed wood.
  • Use an enzymatic cleaner promptly for urine, and replace any pad that has absorbed it.

Daily: ten seconds

Keep a microfibre cloth near the tower. Once a day, wipe the platform edges and the top perch with a dry or barely damp cloth. Fur collects on edges first, and removing it before it works into a corner is the whole game.

Do not spray cleaner directly onto the wood. Spray the cloth, wipe, then dry the surface. Excess water is the one thing sealed wood does not enjoy.

Weekly: two minutes

  • Vacuum the sisal posts with a brush attachment. Sisal is rope; a hard nozzle can fray it.
  • Shake out or vacuum the removable pads.
  • Wipe the high-traffic platforms with a damp cloth.
  • Check the wall strap and the base fixings. A tower that has been climbed hard for a week can work a screw loose.

Monthly: ten minutes

  • Wash the fabric pads on a gentle cycle if the care label allows, then air-dry them fully.
  • Wipe the capsules inside and out with a mild soap solution. Rinse the cloth, not the capsule.
  • Look at the sisal. If a sleeve is frayed through to the core, replace it before the cat starts working on the post itself.
  • Tighten any accessible bolts a quarter turn. Do not over-tighten; wood compresses.

What to avoid

Steam cleaners. They push moisture into seams and can lift the finish.

Bleach and abrasive powders. They dull the surface and leave residue that cats will lick.

Furniture polish with silicone. It makes the surface slippery and can leave an oily film on paws.

Soaking the base. The base carries the most weight and the most moisture risk. Wipe it, do not wash it.

Odour, honestly

A sealed wood tower does not hold odour the way carpet does, but it is not odour-proof. If a cat urinates on a platform, clean it promptly with an enzymatic cleaner, dry it thoroughly and replace any pad that has absorbed the liquid. Enzyme products need contact time; follow the bottle rather than wiping immediately.

If the smell persists after the surface is dry, the liquid has likely reached a seam or a screw hole. In that case, remove the affected platform if the model allows it and clean the joint directly.

The point of the routine

The goal is not a showroom finish. It is to keep the tower in the state where the cat still wants to use it and you still want it in the room. A short routine, done often, beats a heroic deep clean that nobody repeats.
